Write each spelling word two times each.Grammar: Direct Object
The direct object of a verb is the thing or noun being acted upon. You can locate the direct object in a sentence by finding the verb that the subject is acting upon and asking the question What? or Whom?.
Let's first look at some simple sentences.
Josh threw the ball.
Threw is the verb. What did Josh throw? He threw the ball. Ball is the direct object.
The cat ate the mouse.
Ate is the verb. What did the cat eat? The cat ate the mouse. Mouse is the direct object.

The cat ate the mouse.
Ate is the verb. What did the cat eat? The cat ate the mouse. Mouse is the direct object.
As we learned in our phrases section, whole phrases and clauses can be direct objects.
examples of phrases and clauses as direct objects:

Thought is the verb. What did Carmen think? She thought that wasps built a nest in her windowpane. The clause that wasps built a nest in her windowpane is the direct object.
The baby wanted to play with the kitten.
Wanted is the verb. What did the baby want? The baby wanted to play with the kitten. The phrase to play with the kitten is the direct object.
**Don't confuse direct objects with Complements. Complements add to linking verbs and linking verbs do not have direct objects or objects that the verb acts upon. If you ask what? with a linking verb (to be, to hear, to look, to seem), you will find a verb complement not a direct object.
example:
He is shy.
What is he? Shy. But shy is not a noun, it is an adjective and cannot be acted upon.
example:

What is he? Shy. But shy is not a noun, it is an adjective and cannot be acted upon.

Tuesday
Write each spelling word in a sentence that uses only active verbs. That means you cannot use any form of the verb "to be": am, was, are, were, is.Literary Device: Euphemism
Euphemism takes direct speak and changes the wording so that the statement is indirect. In a way it takes hard language or something that is difficult to be born and softens it.
examples:
Fired from a job changed to laid off or let go.
Killing oneself changed to committed suicide.
Killing oneself changed to committed suicide.
Fat changed to curvy.
Prison changed to correctional facility.
Died changed to passed away.
Ugly changed to plain or 'has a good personality'.
Ugly changed to plain or 'has a good personality'.
Mean and angry changed to 'going through a rough patch'.
famous examples:
When I said
I have to lay you off
a parallel universe was born
in his face, one where flesh
is a loose shirt
taken to the river and beaten
against rocks. Just
by opening my mouth I destroyed
his faith
. . .
We sat.
I stared at my hands, he stared
at the wall staring at my hands.
I said other things
about the excellent work he’d done
and the cycles of business
which are like
the roller-coaster thoughts
of an oscilloscope.

Remember
by Christina Georgina Rossetti
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
Gone far away into the silent land;
~ Christina Georgina Rossetti, Remeber

Villenelle
The villenelle is a French form of poetry that has five three line stanzas (tercets) and a final four line stanza (quatrain). Each line should have a length of 8-10 syllables. The first and third lines get repeated in a certain order throughout the poem. This is the base of a villenelle:
A(1)
b
A(2)

A(1)

All lines labelled with "A(1)" are the same as the first line of the poem. All lines labelled "A(2)" are the same as the third line of the poem. All lines labelled "a" rhyme with the first and third lines and all rhymes labelled "b" rhyme with the second line of the poem.
Here's an example:
The Potter's Hands
these ghosts emerge when summoned by their God
the potter's hands arouse all from their sleep
daughters and sons whose bones lie in a heap
old spirits mourn from lives mangled and flawed
reflections rise above the waters deep
the trumpet sounds the call and angels sweep
ye people of the earth must end this fraud
the potter's hands arouse all from their sleep
the ghosts do howl, for many sins they weep
another life, a body formed from sod
reflections rise above the waters deep
arouse your minds and climb this mountain steep
become like those whose feet in armor shod
the potter's hands arouse all from their sleep
come forth earth's sons with promises to keep
join forces with the souls whom angels laud
reflections rise above the waters deep
the potter's hands arouse all from their sleep
Here's one from the Famous Poet Dylan Thomas
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night
by Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieve it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Now it is your turn to write this difficult poem form. Write a villenelle. Be careful to follow all the rules for lines, refrain, rhyming, and syllable count.
